چکیده

We have designed a process-insensitive preamplifier for an optical receiver, fabricated it in several different minimum feature sizes of standard digital CMOS, and demonstrated design scaleability of this analog integrated circuit design. The same amplifier was fabricated in a 1.2 μm and two different 0.8 μm processes through the MOSIS foundry [1]. The amplifier uses a multistage, low-gain-per-stage approach. It has a total of 5 identical cascaded stages. Each stage is essentially a current mirror with a current gain of 3. Three of these preamplifiers have been integrated with a GaAs MetalSemiconductor-Metal (MSM) photodetector and one with an InGaAs MSM detector by using a thin-film epilayer device separation and bonding technology [2]. This quasi-monolithic front-end of an optical receiver virtually eliminates the parasitics between the photodetector and the silicon CMOS preamplifier. We have demonstrated speed and power dissipation improvement as the minimum feature size of the transistors shrink.

Highly Integrated InP HBT Optical Receivers - Solid-State Circuits, IEEE Journal of

This paper presents two highly integrated receiver circuits fabricated in InP heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) technology operating at up to 2.5 and 7.5 Gb/s, respectively. The first IC is a generic digital receiver circuit with CMOS-compatible outputs. It integrates monolithically an automatic-gain-control amplifier, a digital clock and data recovery circuit, and a 1 : 8 demultiplexer, ...

A Low Noise Cmos Preamplifier for Analog Electro-optical Fibre Links

Several pin-diode preamplifiers have been implemented in bipolar and CMOS processes for electrooptic digital signal transmission. We present a new pin-diode receiver preamplifier optimised for analog signal transmission. The design is based on the active feedback transimpedance circuit which does not require on-chip passive components. The preamplifier has been designed and fabricated in a 0.7μ...

A 0.015-mm 60-GHz Reconfigurable Wake-Up Receiver by Reusing Multi-Stage LNAs

An area-efficient 60-GHz wake-up receiver (WuRx) using reconfiguration techniques of multistage low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) is presented. The gain stages of the 60-GHz LNA are reused as the envelope detectors for the wake-up receiver. Therefore, the bulky components such as extra switches between the wake-up receiver and the LNA, additional antennas, and excess input matching network can be rem...

A 3 - V Cmos Optical Preamplifier with Dc Photocurrent Rejection

This paper describes a CMOS optical preamplifier suitable for free-space, infrared wireless communications. The design is differential for improved power supply noise rejection, and an active cancellation scheme is used for eliminating dc photocurrents that are generated by ambient light. Making use of a 0.35-µm CMOS process, the preamplifier provides a transimpedance gain of 20 kΩ over a bandw...

An Optical-Electrical Sub-Sampling Down-Conversion Receiver with Continuous-Time EA Modulation

This thesis describes the design and implementation of an optical-electrical subsampling down-conversion receiver that employs EA modulation. Accurate subsampling of an electrical RF signal in the optical domain is achieved by using a low-jitter mode-locked-laser and a high-bandwidth interferometer. The sub-sampled information is then digitized by an optical-electrical continuous-time (CT) EA a...
